NetCDF data used in analysis presented in "Quantifying numerical mixing in a tidally forced global eddy-permitting ocean model", for submission to Journal of Advances in Modelling the Earth System.

These data have been produced from an ensemble of eight experiments based on the GO8p0 configuration of NEMO v4.0.1 on a global 1/4° grid, as described in the paper. The “main” 6-member ensemble is intended to test the z~ vertical coordinate in the presence of tidal forcing, and includes a non-tidal control with the default "z-star" fixed coordinate, and five experiments with both z-star and the z-tilde vertical coordinate, using two values for the two z~ timescale parameters (5 days and 20 days) for both non-tidal and tidally-forced cases. All fields used in the analysis described in the paper are included for these experiments. Tidal harmonics are supplied for each of the five tidal frequencies used in the forcing, namely M2, S2, N2, K1 and O1. Two additional experiments are included as controls to test the sensitivity to the Simmons et al (2014) tidal mixing parameterization (zstar_tide_nomix) and the sensitivity to the minimum shelf depth required for stability in tidally forced simulations (zstar_notide_16m); for these two experiments only a selection of fields, as described in the paper, are supplied. The first part of each filename refers to the name of the experiment (see Table 1 of the paper for more details), and the second refers to the fields contained in the file. The latter are as follows, where NNN denotes the experiment name: - NNN_tide_SSH_harmonics.nc: five tide harmonics of surface elevation for the three main tidal simulations. - NNN_tide_SSH_harmonics_hp.nc: five tidal harmonics of surface elevation with high-pass filter applied to extract the surface signature of internal tides. - NNN_1996-2005_X.nc: time averages of model fields from 1996 to 2005 on each model grid, where X is {T, U, V, W}. - NNN_1h_1996010100_grid-W.nc: single hourly mean of fields at model W points, including vertical velocity and vertical grid scale. - NNN_global_means.nc: time series of annual-mean global mean ocean fields. - NNN_seasonal_seaice.nc: mean seasonal cycle of monthly ice fields from 1996 to 2005. - NNN_transports.nc: large-scale annual mean transports, comprising Atlantic overturning strength at 26°N and 45°N, Drake Passage volume transport, and Indonesian throughflow. - NNN_kappas.nc: overturning streamfunction, explicit diffusivity and effective diffusivity calculated from density transformation rate, all evaluated in potential density – latitude space
